Can kiwi help you sleep better?
Kiwi makes it to the top of the list for vitamin C, antioxidants, fiber and mineral content. It is also known to help children with respiratory problems. But it seems that kiwi may have a bonus benefit and help improve sleep quality and quantity!
A study done at Taipei Medical University in Taiwan studied the effects of kiwi consumption on sleep. Participants in the study ate 2 kiwis 1 hour before to going to bed and the results showed they fell asleep more quickly and slept deeply.
Several nutrients contained in the kiwi promote sleep. The high levels of antioxidants and serotonin certainly contribute. Kiwi is also a magnesium- and potassium-rich fruit that helps promote relaxation and circulation. Both these minerals are also important in muscle recovery which occurs during sleep.
While more research is still needed for what types of food may directly affect sleep, eating a kiwi may be worth a try for more reasons that just the potential sleep benefits!
